How it started.

Maroon Grove Farm was a seed that sat dormant in my mind and heart following the years that it came to life in early 2020.

It began with a vision I had for a long time after working on commercial farms, attending agrarian workshops, and simultaneously diving deeper into my family's history in agriculture. My paternal and maternal lineages have farming ties in eastern North Carolina and Sussex County, Virginia. Maroon Grove is located in Sussex County and I am proud to be the returning generation to get back to the land.  I found a neglected farm up the road from where my ancestors previously were farming and was able to purchase it with monetary reparations. I brought the farm back to life with the help of community and my partner Rob. He helps me with the many projects on the farm and has been an integral part to the growth of Maroon Grove since moving here in 2023. Rob’s always brainstorming on various ways the farm could be more efficient, making the materials lists for projects, and writing up budgets for farm expenses.

Almost 10 years ago I was introduced to herbal medicine and was changed forever by plant wisdom. I value distributing medicine through mutual aid and by giving it away to loved ones who need it. I’m also able to provide a space for birds and pollinators with native plants, flowers and medicinals grown on the farm.  We prioritize maintaining a balanced ecosystem for all of the life here at Maroon Grove.

Raising animals with care and attention to detail is something I take pride in. As a kid I spent lots of time outside with my dogs who were my whole world. Now my world consists of donkeys, ducks, goats, sheep, chickens, a cat and my dogs (including one named Rob HAHA). Living along side my animals allows me to pay close attention and notice the slightest changes in their behavior. Graduating horseshoeing school in 2023 taught me even more about animal care and maintenance. I work as a part-time farrier two days a week in the central Virginia region trimming donkeys, horses, and small ruminants. I was previously an after school gardening teacher to elementary and middle schoolers and it brings me so much joy to see the faces of babes light up when interacting with the critters. My primary focus for the farm is to hold a safe and intentional teaching space while cultivating a livelihood for me and my family.
